Dentistry

Protecting your pet’s health through preventive dental care.

Several studies indicate that dental disease may play a significant role in the development of kidney disease in dogs and cats. Ongoing dental care, including routine cleanings and daily home care, is essential to preventing dental disease and oral pain in dogs and cats. Pain from gingivitis or fractured teeth can be very difficult to recognize in pets until dental disease is very severe.

Early signs of dental disease include:

  • Avoiding interaction with family members
  • Sleeping more or becoming less active
  • For small dogs and cats- resisting being picked up

For each patient, our dental procedures include pre-operative bloodwork, careful anesthetic monitoring throughout the procedure, and continuous observation during recovery. A full oral exam is performed while your pet is under anesthesia, and any signs of painful dental disease are addressed or referred to a veterinary dental specialist when needed.

The most effective way to slow the progression of dental disease at home is daily tooth brushing. Using reward-based training can help some pets enjoy having their teeth brushed, and there are alternative options available to help manage dental health if daily brushing isn’t a good fit for you and your pet.

Regular dental cleanings and consistent at-home care are key to your pet’s health and a longer, happier life.
